Madison Square Garden Arena : Home of New York Knicks NBA Team

Madison Square Garden (MSG) is also known as The Garden and has been the name of four arenas in New York City. It is also the name of the entity that owns the arena. The first two incarnations of the arena were located at the Northeast corner of Madison Square from which the arena derived its name. Eventually, a new Garden was opened on December 15, 1925 at 50th Street and 8th Avenue with 17000 seats. The current garden is at 7th avenue between 31st and 33rd Streets, situated on top of Pennsylvania Station. It is controlled by the Madison Square Garden, L.P. subsidiary of Cablevision.

The present MSG hosts about 320 events a year but is best known as home of the New York Rangers of the NHL, the New York Knicks of the NBA and their sister operation the New York Liberty of the WNBA. The arena hosted the 1994 NHL All-Star Game and 1998 NBA All-Star Game, three WNBA All-Star Games and a part of the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.

WWE also considers the Garden as home arena, with MSG having hosted several WrestleMania and Summerslam events, two Survivor Series events and the 2000 and 2008 Royal rumble. Even in the field of boxing, many of the biggest fights were held at Madison Square Garden. Before promoters such as Don King and Bob Arum moved boxing to Las Vegas, Madison Square Garden was considered the mecca of boxing.

Many large music concerts in New York City take place at the Garden. The famous ones include The Concert for New York City after the September 11 attacks and John Lennon’s final concert appearance before he got murdered in 1980. Other special events like tennis and circus events are also hosted at the arena. Annual graduation ceremonies for the New York Police Academy, New York University, Baruch College/CUNY and Yeshiva University are also held at Madison Square Garden. It is also the site for the annual Grammy Awards in New York At present, seating in the Garden is arranged in six ascending levels. The first level, available for basketball and concerts but not hockey, is the “floor” or “court-side” seating. Above this is the logo seating, followed by 100-level and 200-level promenades, the 300-level promenade and the 400-level or mezzanine. The arena seat 18200 for hockey, 19763 for basketball and 20000 center-stage and 19522 end-stage for concerts.

Madison Square Garden is more than just an arena. it also features the WaMu Theater seating between 2000 to 5600 for concerts and can also be used for meetings, stage shows and graduation ceremonies. The Expo Center is used for trade shows, cat shows, stamp shows, etc. there is also a 9500 square-foot terrace and two restaurants, the Garden Club and the Play-by-play.
