The American Airlines Arena is located in Downtown Miami, Miami, Florida along Biscayne Bay and is used for basketball games and concerts. It was constructed as a replacement for the Miami Arena and designed by the architecture firms Arquitectonica and 360 Architecture.

It is home to the Miami Heat of the NBA. Miami Sol, the WNBA team also played at the arena from the time of its birth in 2000 to its folding up in 2002. In 1999, American Airlines purchased the naming rights for $42 million over 20 years.

On December 31, 1999, the American Airlines Arena opened with a Gloria Estefan concert. Two days later, on January 2, 2000, the Miami Heat played their first game in the new arena.

The 2006 NBA Finals were hosted by the American Airlines Arena as well as the American Airlines Center, in which the Miami Heat played the Dallas Mavericks. Because of this, the series was nicknamed as the American Airlines series by some people.

As part of the sponsorship arrangement, a giant aircraft was painted on top of the arena’s roof, with an American airlines logo in the center. The arena also has luxury skyboxes called “Flagship Lounges”, a trademark originally used for America’s premium-class lounges at several airports. The arena is known for its unusual scoreboard, which changes colors depending on the atmosphere.

Owned by Miami sports and Entertainment Authority Operator Leisure Management International Construction, the arena has a seating capacity of 19600 with upper levels and 16000 without upper levels. It seats a minimum of 5000 people and a maximum of 20000 people.

The Waterfront Theater within the arena can seat between 3000 and 5800. it is the largest theater in Florida and can be used for not only concerts but also family, Broadway and other stage shows.

Other events hosted at the AAA are the MTV Video Music Awards, both in 2004 and 2005, WCW Uncensored 2000, World Wrestling Entertainment RAW on January 1, 2007, Royal Rumble event on January 29, 2006, and Survivor Series (2007) on November 18, 2007, first UFC event in the state of Florida, UFC 42: Sudden Impact, on April 25, 2003, In November 2002, Cher's Living Proof: The Farewell Tour, American Idol 2008 auditions and many more.

The arena is scheduled to play host to 1st and 2nd round games in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Celine Dion will perform her Taking chances Tour at the arena on January 23, 2009.
