The Indiana Pacers are one of the eight teams in the Central Division of the Eastern Conference of the NBA. Named for Indiana’s history of raising harness racing horses, called pacers, the team’s name also refers to the pace car used during the Indianapolis 500.

The team came into the NBA in 1976. After excelling in the American Basketball Association by winning three league championships in just nine months, the Indiana Pacers and three other teams switched to NBA. In the early days of their NBA campaign, the Pacers had hard times. As the merger agreement denied them TV revenue for several years, they had very little to improve themselves. They posted just one winning season in their first 13 years. After over a decade of mediocre performance, the Indiana Pacers finally started to play good basketball and turned into a force to reckon with.
