TD Banknorth Garden is a sports arena situated in Boston, Massachusetts. Often, it is called The Garden or the traditional Boston Garden and derives its name from its sponsor TD Banknorth.

When constructed to replace the aging Boston Garden, the arena was called FleetCenter. The arena opened on September 30, 1995. In honor of the original Boston Garden, the facility was officially names TD Banknorth Garden on July 1, 2005.

This place is the home arena for the Boston Celtics, an NBA team as well as for the Boston Bruins, an NHL team. It is also the site of the annual Beanpot, and hosts the annual Hockey East Championships. Many national sports events have been hosted by this arena including the 1999 and 2003 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds and the 2006 Women’s Final Four.

TD Banknorth Garden is one of three NBA arenas (apart from the Target Center and the Amway Arena) with parquet floors. The Boston Celtics are best known for the tradition of the parquet floor, originally created after World War II because of the cost and scarcity of lumber in that time.

Just like the Boston Garden, the TD Banknorth Garden is built on top of Boston’s North Station, a major transportation point. The Commuter Rail waiting area became crowded with fans waiting along with commuters and several fast food concessions in a relatively small area. There is a concourse on the second floor which is about the same size as the previous main ground floor concourse, but this is only used as an entryway to the arena. Now that work has finished on the expanded North Station concourse in early 2007, there is greater space for patrons entering or leaving the Garden.

Before the 2006-07 season, the TD Banknorth Garden underwent a major renovation, installing a new HD entertainment board. Video advertising panels replaced the traditional scrolling panels and a see-through shot clock was added for basketball. In 2008, the parent company TD Banknorth will become TD Commerce Bank, hich may or may not affect the arena’s name.
